Abbott Laboratories has submitted a coronavirus test that can determine if a person is infected in just five minutes.

The developers claim that the new device can be used in any healthcare facility. The molecular test looks for those fragments of the coronavirus genome that can be detected quickly. According to John Freels, vice president of research and development at Abbott Diagnostics, a thorough search to completely eliminate the infection can take up to 13 minutes.

Abbott has already obtained an emergency use permit from the US Food and Drug Administration “for use by authorized laboratories and patient care facilities.”
