THE BRITISH SPREAD THE INTERNET TO RECORD SPEED

Researchers from University College London, along with Xtera and KDDI Research, were able to reach Internet speeds of 178 terabytes per second.

At this rate, the researchers say, the entire library of movies and series on Netflix will load in less than a second. This is a new record speed of the Internet – one fifth more than the previous record set in Japan.

To transmit data, the authors of the study used fiber optic cable – that is, the same cable through which information is transmitted on the global network and now. However, they improved it, expanding the light spectrum almost twice.

An optical signal is transmitted through the optical fiber, which is reflected from its inner walls. It is relatively fast and cheap because the speed of light is 300 thousand kilometers per second.
